New OpenSSO authentication plugin for MediaWiki

MediaWiki

Pat Patterson, from Sun Microsystems, has released a quick proof of concept of an OpenSSO authentication plugin for MediaWiki. This could be a really useful plugin for any organization that has decided to go the Web SSO route. If you aren’t familiar with OpenSSO, and you maintain a number of applications with some form of cookie trusted mess, or multiple logins, I highly recommend checking it out.

I was actually planning on writing this extension, and haven’t had time to get to it. I’ve asked Pat if I can test, clean up, and maintain his extension in Wikimedia’s SVN.

Do you have a more polished version of this plugin available? I’m looking to use it on a production server, and so far it’s required some modification on my part to get it to work.

Curious to see what progress you’ve made.

I was waiting for a response as to whether or not Sun would GPL license the plugin. The OpenSSO lead, at the time, said he would forward the request up, and would get back with me; however, he is no longer working at Sun, so I have no idea of the status of my request. I will try to resend the request to the new OpenSSO lead.Unfortunately, that means I haven’t touched it yet. I’d honestly prefer to rewrite this from scratch than to use a license that is incompatible with every other extension I’ve written. I really don’t want to have the possibility of polluting my code with a non-compatible license. It was really poor form on Sun’s part to release this as CDDL.

Any update? Is this dead or something still worth looking in to?
